Marathon High strives to transform the lives of Austin youth through running by training for and completing the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon. With long hours in the classroom, unhealthy eating habits, sedentary lifestyles and lack of self-confidence, youth in our society are at risk for diseases later in life. With roots in the Austin running community, Marathon High has a vision for addressing this health and learning crisis. Through their training and completion of the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon, we hope that students learn to deny these societal limitations and achieve their potential. We give youth this life changing experience during the imperative adolescent years in the hope that the lessons they learn become life long habits.

Our students are 6th – 12th graders at our participating schools. Most are not initially involved in their school sports programs and have never considered training for a marathon. They are intrigued by the idea of pushing themselves farther than they thought possible and the opportunity for improving fitness. Often after completing the marathon or half marathon, our students join their schools cross country and track teams becoming important members of their distance teams.
